iLearn Insights can now show you whether a student was onshore or offshore when they last accessed your iLearn unit and then display this on a location map so you can see where in the world they are.

Find out by running the ‘Participants Report’

Data for the ‘Last accessed location‘ for each student in your unit has been added as a new column within the ‘Participants’ report in iLearn Insights.

‘Last accessed location’ information can be accessed from Unit > Participants menu.

Here’s how this information is being used in the Master of Public Health

iLearn insights has been a useful tool in supporting our Unit Convenors and Course Director in monitoring our students’ engagement for the Master of Public Health (MPH) course. As many students were scattered all around the world in 2021 due to COVID, I reached out to Shamim to have this Student Location Report created, using the IP address location on where the students last accessed their units from. Our session 2, 2021 Unit Convenors found this function to be useful as they were able to trace which students were onshore or offshore for the arrangement of the assessments’ timing and method of delivery. As we are getting ready for session 1, 2022 delivery, and checking on iLearn insights, I’m finding it useful to see improvement on this report to include the map of the world to find the countries where students are located.

The world map highlights student numbers by country

View the locations of students accessing your iLearn unit. This is based on the student’s last accessed IP address. Please note that if any student uses VPN to access iLearn, then that student access location might not be accurate. This is because there are some IP addresses that iLearn insights cannot map to a country and so all those students will be classed as ‘unknown location’ and the total number will be shown at the top right corner of the geographic chart.

Please find below some examples of the student location map:

Example location map 1
Example location map 2

Report shows last accessed location for each individual student

At this stage instead of displaying country and city information, iLearn insights will display either onshore (in Australia), offshore (outside Australia), or ‘not known‘ for each student’s location where they last accessed iLearn.

Please note students offshore using a VPN may appear to be onshore within the ‘Last accessed location’ column.

You can filter by using the ‘Last accessed location’ selection box, or you can sort by clicking the table heading.
