A free massive open online course (MOOC) for the international higher education sector. Course commences 1st March.

With 24 modules, it is designed for new teachers, those who wish to enhance student learning or teaching practice and emerging leaders in higher education. Study is self-paced in two hour modules that can be completed over Session 1.

This course is for you if you:

  • teach in higher education anywhere in the world
  • want content designed by learning and teaching experts
  • would like to enhance your teaching and your students’ learning
  • are interested in scoping the course for your institution’s professional development program
  • are a sessional, contract or continuing teacher

1. New to Teaching

Topics covered:

Teaching your first class, Planning for
learning, Diverse learners, Online learning,
Feedback, Learning and teaching theories,
Sessional staff, and Reflection for learning.

A digital badge is available for the ‘New to Teaching’ pathway.

2. Enhancing student learning

Topics covered:

Psychology of learners and learning, Diverse
learners, Online learning, Universal design,
Collaborative learning, First year transition,
Work integrated learning, and Reflection
for learning

3. Enhancing your teaching

Topics covered:

Learning and teaching theories, Curriculum
design, Assessment 1, Assessment 2, Peer
review of teaching Academic mentoring,
Managing student teams, and Scholarship
of teaching

4. Leading learning and teaching

Topics covered:

Leadership for learning and teaching,
Reflection for learning, Higher education
in context, Quality assurance, Gender
equity, Psychology of learners and learning,
First year transition, Scholarship of teaching

The course is hosted by the Council of Australasian University Leaders in Learning and Teaching (CAULLT) and is led by Associate Professor Agnes Bosanquet (Macquarie University) and Associate Professor Marina Harvey.

The MOOC has been completely revised and updated for 2023 with new modules, new content and new learning activities. It has been developed by over 50 content experts including teachers, researchers, university leaders and academic developers.

The MOOC has been extremely successful with over 8000 colleagues enrolling from 106 countries since 2018. Fourty four institutions from 11 countries have requested the MOOC content for their institution’s LMS. The course was a 2018 finalist with Distinction in the Australasian Academic Development Good Practice Awards.
