This free ADCET Webinar explores autistic students experiences when enrolling and attending university and is led by Diana Tan and Marion Rabuka from the Macquarie School of Education.

Autistic university enrollment has doubled in recent years, but their completion rates remain lower than non-autistic people. Stigma and discrimination are consistently identified as a significant challenge in existing studies of autistic university experiences.

In this co-produced project, autistic and non-autistic researchers conducted semi-structured interviews with 21 autistic university students in Australia. The analysis explored two key questions:

  1. the circumstances in which students experienced discrimination at universities, and
  2. how autistic students approach university and how universities can better support autistic students.

Recommendations for creating a neuro-affirming environment for autistic students at universities will be shared in the webinar.
